This delightful 15 karat yellow gold key brooch is full of symbolism. The Victorians had a fascination with sentimental love tokens and a brooch like this one would have been given with the meaning being fully implicit. Rubies to symbolise passion and diamonds are ‘forever’ of course. The key - is the key to a loved one’s heart and the branch symbolizes peace and unity. Both the rubies and diamonds set in the brooch are rose cut stones. A lovely antique piece to mark a Ruby Wedding or simply for a meaningful gift.

Swallows were a popular motif in Victorian jewellery as they had a special meaning for fishermen and sailors. Swallow brooches were often given to loved ones when they set out on a journey in a bid to keep them safe. It was a symbol of love and protection to help ensure their return.

The swallow also represents everlasting love, care, affection and loyalty towards family and friends. This connection to impressive personality traits occurs because swallows choose a mate to breed with for life, representing fidelity and steadfastness.
